BOOK POST | COMIC ROUND UP | MAY

Goodness me, June is almost upon us. Nearly half way through the year.

Right, I will stop going on the passage of time and how quickly it has passed and get on with the task at hand.
Yep, it is that time of month where I go on about the comics that have been on my ipad this month. To be honest, it has been an up and down kind of month, although I recently read Sheets and that blew me away.

Invincible - Compendium two and three

Robert Kirkham

I started this journey after watching the TV series and simply could not wait until the next series is on TV. This was a mammoth task, over 1000 pages and 16 years of comics and goodness me was this one hell of a journey. And surprisingly there was a good ending!

SHEETS

Brenna Thummler

This was a five star read for me. Such a beautiful comic, both the art and the story.
I actually wrote a review about this one, so I won’t go on about it much, but if you are interested you can read it Here

BLACKSAD

Juan Diaz Canales, Juanjo Guarnido (illustrator) Anthya Flores (Translator

Anthropomorphising animals in comics is nothing new, except when Juanjo Guarnido is doing the art.
The story is a noirish story set in the 1940’s with the lead character who is a private detective (and also a cat)

The world is populated with a menagerie of animals and every one is gloriously detailed.

The story is good in this collection of the first three issues of the comic, but what elevates this comic above every other comic with animals as the main characters is the art. Juanjo Guarnido mixes all different styles of art; classical, superhero, Disney and many others.
(Juanjo Guarnido did actually work for Disney and worked on a number of Disney’s biggest productions before it was overtook by the trademark computer art of Pixar)

It’s a fantastic comic and well worth a read.

BATMAN FULL MOON

Rodney Barnes (writer), Steven Subic (illustrator)

I can’t say I was all that impressed with this one to be honest. The story was pretty weak, the characters were uninteresting and I wasn’t even bothered about the art.

About the only thing that I did like was the hark back to the old universal Werewolf films.

Even Zatana didn’t save this book

The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson

Eddie Gorodetsky, Marc Andreyko, Pete Woods (artist)

This was one of those comics that I knew absolutely nothing about, but I ended up quite enjoying it. The story revolves around Nick Wilson, who for a reason that is never really explained, has superpowers. And then it disappears leaving Nick as a normal bloke again who has to build up his life again following his powers disappearing.
If you want to read some further thoughts you can read what I wrote on GOODREADS if you want.

DID YOU HEAR WHAT EDDIE GEIN DONE?

HAROLD SCHECTER (WRITER), ERIC POWELL (WRITER/ILLUSTRATOR)

Telling the story of Ed Gein, the famous killer that Psycho, Buffalo Bill and Leatherface was based on, this was proper nightmare fuel.
Whilst the three serial killers are all horrible enough, the full extent of Ed Gein’s atrocities is much more horrific than all of these characters combined.
At times the story does lag a little in parts, but the exploration of Gein’s crimes and his psychosis is uttterly disturbing.
This one is not for the faint of heart as it does not shy away from any of Gein’s crimes and his peculiar proclivities.

DICK TRACY

Alex Segura (Author), Michael Moreci (Author), Geraldo Borges (Illustrator), Mark Englert (Illustrator)

I can’t say that I have ever been all that into Dick Tracy to be honest, but my interest was piqued after watching a review of the new iteration by Mad Cave comics, and I must say that I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Set in 1947, this is a grittier representation of the titular detective. Tracy feels like a much more rounded character as not only does he battle crime bosses and gang lords, but he has to overcome PTSD after serving in the army.

The art is great in the book, being both reminiscent of the comic strip, but with a more modern edge to it.

Well there you go! That is the end of this month’s comic round up.
Have you read any of these comics? Is there any that interest you?
You can always find me knocking about on Bluesky.
